Capcom Drops Classic Resident Evil Games on Steam

Resident Evil

Dust off your memory cards (or don’t, because we have cloud saves now). Capcom has just pulled a massive win for retro fans. Resident Evil fans, in particularly have something to be pleased about.

As of April 2, 2026, the original survivor horror trinity and one of the finest RPGs of the PS1 era have officially landed on Steam.

If you’ve been looking for an excuse to return to the Spencer Mansion or the doomed streets of Raccoon City. Or, if you’re like us and been mooting the idea of making a start at the beginning of the series. This is probably it!

Maybe it’s time to watch some of the animated shows like Infinite Darkness, too?

The Original Nightmares Return

We aren’t talking about the (admittedly excellent) remakes here. These are the original experiences that defined the genre, now updated to play nice with modern hardware and controllers.

  • Resident Evil (1996): Where the survival horror legend began.
  • Resident Evil 2: Leon and Claire’s first day in hell.
  • Resident Evil 3: Nemesis: The relentless pursuit that gave us all nightmares.

For the RPG crowd, Capcom hasn’t forgotten you. Breath of Fire IV is also making its Steam debut.

Follow Ryu and a cast of legendary warriors as they attempt to stop an immortal emperor in a world rendered in some of the most beautiful sprite work of its era.

Flash Sale Alert: 50% Off

Capcom isn’t just dropping these gems and walking away; they’re launching with a massive 50% discount.

Important: This deal is only live until Wednesday, April 15 at 18:00 BST. If you want to snag these classics for half-price, you’ll need to move faster than a Crimson Head.

Modern Compatibility, Classic Vibes

According to Capcom, these versions are designed to preserve the original integrity of the games while ensuring they actually run on your Windows 11/12 rigs. Expect full controller support and compatibility tweaks right out of the box.

With the Resident Evil franchise sitting at over 183 million units sold, these ports are a great way for new fans to see the DNA that built a titan, and for veterans to finally retire their dusty physical discs.

No better time to start?

Since the buzz of Resident Evil Requiem, there’s been this slow burn in the back of my head that really wants to see these games through. Namely Resident Evil 1 – 4.

After playing the original 2 on the PlayStation back in the day, i have fond memories, blurred with fear from Resident Evil VII.

With all 4 having re-masters, and having the originals ported to Steam, it feels like there’s no excuse. Especially at these prices.

I think we’ll go with the remasters and see them at their best. At least initially. But perhaps going back to see them in their original polygonal glory is the safest way to go and not be scared?

We’ll see, but Resident Evil is very much on the dyingartmedia.com radar. I’d expect more content about it in due course.

Maybe it’s time to give the old movies a re-watch as well? I genuinely have no clue how well they stick to the core story (assume, not much….), so it’ll be interesting. Maybe some lore guides and nights reading-up on the different viruses and enemies will help?

I wasn’t able to finish Resident Evil VII, as the jump scares and setting we just too much. Hopefully these classics, with the traditional perspective, instead of first-person, will make a difference. At the very least, if they feel a little dated, they’ll be easier to swallow, right?
