ARC Raiders moves to Bi-Annual Updates

Arc Raiders

The Rust Belt is getting a makeover, but you’ll have to wait a little longer for the big stuff. Embark Studios announces a shift in development strategy to focus on transformative updates over monthly patches in ARC Raiders.

By Ben Kirby

Since its launch, ARC Raiders has evolved from a hopeful extraction shooter into a complex, player-driven ecosystem. However, in a candid development update released last week, Executive Producer Aleksander Grøndal admitted that the game’s original monthly update cadence was no longer sustainable, nor was it allowing the team to deliver the depth players expect.

Effective immediately, Embark Studios is moving to a bi-annual major update schedule. While a dedicated live service team will still handle weekly rotations, bug fixes, and store updates, the game-changing content will now arrive twice a year.

Why the Change?

According to Embark, the pressure of a 30-day cycle was limiting the scope of new features. To build a more meaningful long-term experience (one focused on “reclaiming the surface” rather than just surviving it) the team needs more breathing room. This shift also allows for deeper investment in “foundational” health, such as anti-cheat measures and economy balancing.

We’ve been really fortunate since launch with the slew of new content, it certainly seems unsustainable from the outside! ARC Raiders is brilliant, but it’s only going to suffer if there’s too much pressure to push push push.

Frozen Trail

The first fruit of this new philosophy arrives this October with Frozen Trail, described as the largest update in the game’s history.

Raiders can expect:

A Sprawling New Frontier: The largest map to date, featuring layered designs and hidden mysteries within the Rust Belt.

ARC Origins: For the first time, players will begin uncovering the narrative mystery of where the machines actually come from.

Expanded Progression: A raised skill ceiling and an overhauled skill tree to give veteran Raiders new goals.

New Enemies: Ambitious ARC designs with unique behaviors meant to disrupt established extraction meta.

The Nomadic Trader

Raiders won’t have to wait until October for everything. This week, a new mechanic arrives to address “late-game bloat.” A nomadic surface-dwelling Trader will appear for players Level 25 and above.

This Trader is the answer to three major community complaints: cluttered stashes, unrewarding expeditions, and the pain of losing high-value blueprints.

By trading in rare goods, players can unlock:

Extra Stash Space: Finally clearing out that inventory backlog.

The Expedition Vault: A game-changer that allows Raiders to carry over up to five items across an Expedition, lowering the risk of bringing your favorite gear into the field.

This is great news all-around. Stash space is the toughest enemy in Arc Raiders, without a doubt. Un-moving, hard to counter without drastic measures.

ARC Raiders

While some may see the move away from monthly updates as a slowdown, Embark is framing it as an evolution. “The bi-annual cadence gives us the opportunity to build future updates with more intention,” Grøndal stated. “The goal has always been bigger than survival—it’s about one day reclaiming the surface.”

For the Raiders currently braving the machines, the message is clear: the road ahead is longer, but the destination promises to be much more expansive.

Looking at long-term health of a live service game like ARC Raiders is fundemental to letting it live as long as possible. Embark haven’t let us down yet, and it seems unlikely that things will change in that regard.

It’s common sense, and a studio adapting to a massive success that they were likely not expecting. Don’t forget how ARC Raiders just took off like a rocket. Nobody was expecting such a metoric rise.

Embark still operating like an independent developer, despite being taken onboard by Nexon in 2021. It’s really nice to a see a studio thrive and not just be shuttered.
