In a monumental shift for the gaming industry, Bungie has officially announced the end of active development for Destiny 2.
In a sombre but forward-looking news update titled “Every End is a New Beginning,” the studio revealed that the game’s final live-service content update will launch on June 9, 2026.
After over a decade of navigating the stars, defeating gods, and building a massive community across two mainline entries, Bungie is stepping away from the live-service treadmill of Destiny 2 to incubate its next generation of titles.
However, the developer emphasizes that this is not a permanent shutdown. Much like the original Destiny, Destiny 2 will remain online and fully playable for the foreseeable future.
To give the game the grand send-off it deserves, the final June 9 update will introduce a massive celebration alongside highly-requested quality-of-life adjustments to ensure the game remains a robust, welcoming sandbox for years to come.
Here is a breakdown of the major changes coming in Destiny 2’s final chapter.

The Monument of Triumph & The Return of Legendary Marks
The final update will feature the Monument of Triumph, broadening the traditional end-of-year celebrations to weave together experiences from across Destiny 2’s entire history.
Lore enthusiasts will find small character beats, Easter eggs, and narrative payoffs scattered throughout, leaving the story’s characters in interesting places for the future.
Additionally, a familiar currency makes its grand return: Legendary Marks are coming back from the original Destiny era to play a role in this final chapter.
The Refreshed Director
Bungie has listened closely to player feedback regarding navigation. The newly refreshed Director is returning to its rightful place at the centre of the game’s activities.
For those worried about losing content, all Portal activities will remain completely accessible via streamlined lists located in nodes at the bottom of the Director.

Raid and Dungeon Loot Overhaul
To ensure legacy content remains rewarding in perpetuity, all raid and dungeon weapons and armour are being modernized.
This includes full Tier parity, brand-new perks, and unique set bonuses. Crafted weapons will also receive a dedicated upgrade path for Tiers 1–5 (with more details promised in an upcoming This Week in Destiny).
Furthermore, Weekly Featured Raids and Dungeons will return to give players consistent opportunities for high-tiered loot for the rest of Destiny 2 and it’s tenure.
Sandbox and Exotic Upgrades
The sandbox is getting a significant parting gift. All Exotic armour pieces earned since The Edge of Fate launched will be automatically upgraded to Tier 5 stats.
Class abilities are also seeing updates. Titans are getting a complete Ward of Dawn rework, Warlocks will see new Mindspun interactions with Threadling Grenades, and Hunters will experience new capabilities for Trapper’s Ambush.
Bungie even teased an Exotic armour change allowing Warlocks to cast two Nova Bombs in rapid succession.

Onslaught and Crucible Refreshes
- Onslaught: The horde mode is being rebalanced to remove revive tokens and increase scrap drops, prioritizing the classic tower-defense feel. “Shaxxmaxxing” returns, alongside a selection of reprised weapons exclusive to the mode.
- Crucible: Three new modes are arriving. Arena brings gunplay-centric, old-school Bungie PvP vibes to the main rotation. Two wild new modes are entering private matches: Glass Cannon (a throwback to Destiny 1 balancing) and Software (a chaotic, third-person, abilities-only playlist).
- Vehicles and Playlists: Iron Banner will now run every four weeks, alternating with Trials of Osiris on off-weeks. The vehicular mode Heavy Metal returns with a brand-new map and a third vehicle type: The Cabal Walker.
Sparrow Racing League
One of the biggest/best bits of news here is the rereturn of the Sparrow Racing League (SRL). We’ve missed it for a long time in Destiny 2 and it’s coming with a new unique weapon set, along with armour sets and horns.
Re-opening tracks from the original Destiny. The SRL returns permanently in it’s full form.

Gambit Ops and Eververse Economy Changes
Gambit is officially transitioning into the “Ops” category and receiving a rewards refresh, including reprised iconic weapons as tiered gear and a brand-new armour set with a unique set bonus.
On the economy side, Bright Dust will remain fully earnable through gameplay, and its Eververse store rotation is shifting from weekly to daily.
Bungie is also adding a Focusing system for Bright Engrams, allowing players to spend an engram and Bright Dust to target specific duplicate-protected cosmetic categories so they can gradually complete their collections.
The Shift to the Future
The announcement marks a massive turning point for Bungie.
Following a turbulent couple of years under Sony Interactive Entertainment (including financial restructuring and asset impairment charges) the studio is clearly consolidating its resources. It’s a shame they didn’t stay independent, but perhaps that will come again?
With Marathon currently anchoring the studio’s PvP attention, letting Destiny 2 exit active development allows the team to cleanly pivot toward unannounced incubation projects.
For Guardians who have spent thousands of hours in the playlist, June 9 will undoubtedly be an emotional day. But with a restructured sandbox designed to preserve the game’s legacy, Destiny 2 is poised to stay alive in maintenance mode as a monument to one of the most ambitious live-service experiments in gaming history.
