Here’s another favourite! Another Shonen favourite, too. Sure Black Clover isn’t your edgy, underground series that nobody knows. But it’s solid, anyway.
Still desperately waiting for the anime to pick the story back up, I’ve literally re-watched through Black Clover 3 times instead. It has all the classic tropes and hallmarks of a good series. And delivers with heart and some great animation, as it progresses.
Here’s a breakdown of everything we’ve seen so far.

Black Clover
In a world where magic is everything, being born without a lick of it sounds like a death sentence for your social life (sound familiar to My Hero Academia?). But for Asta, our loud and incredibly buff protagonist, it was just the fuel he needed to prove everyone wrong.
Growing up in the boondocks of Hage Village alongside his rival Yuno, Asta spent his days doing enough sit-ups to make a fitness influencer blush. While Yuno was a natural prodigy with a four-leaf clover grimoire, Asta ended up with a crusty, five-leaf book that spat out a massive, rusty anti-magic sword. The titular 5-leaf Black Clover.
This is where the legend truly begins. The journey kicks off properly when both boys head to the capital for the Magic Knights entrance exam.
Yuno predictably slides into the elite Golden Dawn, while Asta gets picked up by Yami Sukehiro, the captain of the Black Bulls. This squad is basically a collection of lovable misfits and societal rejects who prefer property damage over paperwork. It is the perfect home for Asta. He quickly bonds with Noelle Silva, a royal who cannot control her massive mana reserves, and together they start taking on missions that go from hunting boars to defending the very fabric of the kingdom.

Rising Through the Ranks
The narrative hits its stride during the Eye of the Midnight Sun arc. This mysterious group of terrorists starts popping up everywhere, led by a guy named Licht who has a serious grudge against the Clover Kingdom. We get to see some of the most creative magic battles in shonen history.
Whether it is the fight beneath the seabed temple where the Bulls have to push past their limits to beat the beastly Vetto, or the assault on the royal capital, the action never stops escalating.
One of the highlights of this era is the deepening lore of the elves. We learn that the hatred fuelling the villains is not just random malice but a tragic misunderstanding rooted in a massacre from centuries ago.
This adds a layer of emotional weight that elevates the show beyond just screaming and sword swings. Seeing the captains come together, especially during the Royal Knights selection exam, shows off just how much variety there is in the power systems.
We see everything from painting magic to spatial manipulation used in ways that feel fresh and strategic.

The Reincarnation and the Devils
Everything culminates in a massive showdown at the Shadow Palace. The stakes go through the roof as many of our favorite knights are possessed by elven souls, turning friends into formidable foes. It is a masterclass in pacing and payoff. Asta and Yuno eventually team up to face the true mastermind, a high-ranking devil who orchestrated the elf genocide just for a laugh.
This battle is a visual feast, showcasing the bond between the two orphans and proving that hard work and talent are two sides of the same heroic coin. It’s a fundamental part of Black Clover, and comes through so clearly.
Just when you think the kingdom can finally catch its breath, the story expands its horizons. We learn about the Heart, Diamond, and Spade Kingdoms, leading us into the Spade Kingdom Raid arc.
This is where the power scaling gets truly wild. The Dark Triad, a group of siblings fueled by devil powers, starts kidnapping captains to open a gate to the underworld. The animation quality spikes here, giving us some of the most fluid and impactful sequences in the series. Some of Black Clover’s finest.

The Grand Pause
The anime reaches its current stopping point just as the war in the Spade Kingdom reaches a fever pitch. I need to make a point here that, I had no clue the stop was coming. I re-subbed on Crunchyroll to finish the series. Got 2 episodes in, and boom. It stopped, dead. Anyway, on with the stry.
Asta unlocks a new level of synchronization with his devil, Liebe, and the two of them become a whirlwind of anti-magic destruction. It is a bittersweet moment because the production ends right as the stakes are at their absolute highest. However, the hiatus has only allowed the fan base to grow, and the movie that followed showed just how much love and budget this franchise deserves.
Black Clover is a testament to the power of persistence. It started as the underdog of the magazine and grew into a powerhouse of heart and hype.
Every character gets their moment to shine, and the themes of overcoming classism and personal limitations resonate through every episode.
Even with the abrupt stop, the journey we have had so far is nothing short of magical. We are all just waiting at the edge of our seats for the day the music kicks back in and Asta screams his way back onto our screens.
Hopefully we see more of Asta and co this year, but it’s all voice actor rumours and hearsay. It looks like this one isn’t going to be a sprint to the finish, but a Marathon. We’ll get there, and I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait.
Black Clover is one that everyone should watch. Now is a great time to get stuck in.
