This is pretty tenuous when it comes to talking about Pirate Month, but naval warfare counts, right? Plus, this is really exciting. Battlefield 6 is about to grow some water wings….
Wake Island is such a core part of my Battlefield experience, historically speaking, that it’s fundamental to my core love of the franchise. Getting a new version of it, and new Naval Warfare element to an already exceptional game in Battlefield 6, is just icing on the cake.
Community Update
EA and the development team behind Battlefield 6 have dropped a massive bombshell for fans of classic, all-out military sandbox action. Ahead of the highly anticipated launch of Season 4 on July 21, 2026, a brand-new community update has detailed the game’s post-launch evolution, highlighted by a major feature that franchise veterans have been begging for: the return of full-scale Naval Warfare.
The incoming naval update isn’t just a simple cosmetic addition. EA is introducing an entirely new line-up of watercraft engineered specifically for open-ocean skirmishes. Crucially, these vehicles will be supported by an all-new dynamic wave system, meaning the swells and choppy water will physically affect how you aim, drive, and take cover during high-seas shoot-outs.
Everyone has whined that Battlefield 6 maps are too small and that there’s not enough space for vehicle combat. Well, this feels like a great step to not only counter that, but to improve upon whatever has come before it.
Some of my fondest memories in a Battlefield game have been starting on a boat and getting to shore of the map, trying to find a decent flank, or just getting stuck into the chaos head-on. Battlefield 6 goes from strength to strength and this, at least on paper

What’s New in Season 4?
1. Tsuru Reef
This will serve as the flagship playground for the new naval sandbox. Described as one of the largest battlefields in the game, Tsuru Reef is built from the ground up to support seamless transitions between land, air, and sea combat. Players will have to coordinate vehicle pushes on the beaches while avoiding airborne threats and flanking manoeuvres from combat boats.
2. The Return of Wake Island
Later in Season 4, players will get to redeploy on a reimagined version of the legendary Wake Island. Long considered a staple of the franchise’s best sea-to-shore moments, its return perfectly aligns with the season’s focus on aquatic supremacy.

A Look Back: The Battlefield 6 Journey So Far
Since its release, the development team has quietly but aggressively expanded the core package. EA took a moment in their update to reflect on how far the shooter has come:
Map Pool Expansion: The multiplayer roster has expanded from 9 maps at launch to 15 total maps, including recent heavy hitters like Railway to Golmud and Cairo Bazaar.
Weapon Arsenal: Players now have access to 58 weapons alongside an expanded garage of vehicles like the nimble Little Bird helicopter and dirt bikes.
Core Gunplay & Netcode Overhauls: Gunplay has seen massive adjustments based on community feedback. The team highlighted improved, predictable recoil patterns, stronger individual weapon identity, better netcode responsiveness, and the popular return of limb damage multipliers to reward pinpoint accuracy.
For a game that’s had both significant praise and then criticism. Battlefield 6 feels like it’s on the right path to cementing itself long-term as one of the best. I appreciate there are plenty of folk who would disagree with that. But we get a modern take on the Battlefield formula, with all the hallmarks of what it is we want from the series.
Whether you’ve been grinding Battlefield 6 since launch or waiting for the game to find its footing, Season 4 is shaping up to be the perfect boarding point. Secure your squad, prepare your sea legs, and we’ll see you on the reef on July 21.
