In a significant pivot for the future of the studio, Bungie’s newly appointed leadership team has issued a frank public video message addressing ongoing player dissatisfaction, acknowledging past missteps, and outlining a major overhaul of their live-service strategy.
Delivered jointly by Studio Head Poria Torkan and Head of Product Josh Deane, the communication marks an attempt to rebuild trust following years of structural turmoil, studio down-sizing, and community friction.
It’s a big step in the right direction, so long as this kind of engagement continues. Here’s what they had to say.

Bungie Studios
The core message centres on a frank admission that the developer attempted to stretch its workforce too thin across various incubation projects at the expense of its core offerings.
Moving forwards, Bungie intends to consolidate its resources and focus squarely on community expectations, leading off with a dramatic policy reversal regarding Destiny 2.
Destiny 2
For Destiny 2 players, the most substantial revelation is the formal commitment to begin un-vaulting legacy content. The Content Vaulting system, introduced years ago to manage file sizes and technical stability, proved to be one of the most contentious decisions in the game’s history, effectively removing entire paid story campaigns, destinations, and raids.
Bungie leadership confirmed that engineering teams have officially begun work to restore these sunsetted campaigns, locations, and endgame activities into the live game, positioning this technical restoration as an essential precursor to future expansion content.

Marathon
Alongside updates on their flagship shooter, Bungie briefly addressed the state of Marathon, their extraction shooter.
Rather than adhering strictly to standard genre conventions, the project is being expanded to incorporate deeper survival mechanics, alongside a newly planned permanent player-versus-environment mode designed to accommodate a broader range of play styles.
Sign-off
Concluding the update, Bungie leadership emphasised that simple corporate promises would not suffice to mend their relationship with players.
Acknowledging that confidence can only be restored through tangible results, Torkan and Deane called on the community to hold the studio accountable as work gets underway on these ambitious technical and design overhauls.
And we all know, gaming communities love to hold people accountable, so let’s hope they’re ready for the amount of input that they’ll receive. Bungie fans are more committed than most.

Our take
Bungie needs some help, for sure. Some of that is the weight of Destiny 2 and the ever-shifting development and expansions that were kind of holding it back. Undoubtedly, some of it is Sony. Let’s be honest, their recent record with the likes of Hideo Kojima and their stance on squeezing every penny out of their player base is pretty grim. Imagine being a massive studio struggling to survive in that environment.
Moreover, the release of Marathon, whilst pretty positive (it’s a great game!), needed way more push and post-release support. We can all make assumptions about the how’s and why’s. But the fact is, there’s a renewed approach to the game, and that’s something we should all be looking forward to.
Yes, the team has changed plenty over the years, but this is the studio that created Halo, that created the first Destiny, which got us so hooked-in to our first ever MMO-style game. If there’s any studio that deserves a bit of a resurrection, it’s Bungie.
Getting more of the old content back in Destiny 2 will be great. Certainly, since it went into maintenance mode, it feels like the community have been singing it’s praises again. And well…..Sparrow Racing League, baby!!
Marathon needs more love, and deserves it, because it feels great, it has such a solid aesthetic and the genre is pretty popular right now. It just needs to players and the commitment from Bungie. Which it looks to be getting.
We might be witnessing the first tiny steps to some giant changes, and we’re all for it.
If only they could go independent again…..
