Seemingly out of nowhere, Nintendo dropped a new Nintendo Direct last night. Focusing specifically on Starfox.
Within minutes, Miyamoto is talking about a new remake of the classic N64 game, Starfox 64. This is a long-time favourite of ours here at dyingartmedia.com and honestly it’s really exciting.
Seeing the characters re-created, the world re-created. All modern and shiny. is amazing. Obviously following on from the Fox McCloud addition to the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the Starfox crew have had more eyes on them than ever before. Now Nintendo are going to capitalise and get a new game for the Switch 2 out on June 25th 2026.
It’s going to be time to smack Andross about the face again, isn’t it?
Starfox
For the uninitiated, Starfox dates back to the SNES in 1993, with the big release of Starfox 64 in 1997. The 64 game has been re-released a couple of times now with a 3DS version, and a re-imagining of it in Starfox Zero.
With an open-world Gamecube game that apparently only we enjoyed, there’s not been a lot to the series, beyond the remakes of the same game a few times.
This is, of course, another remake. But, with a game as good as Starfox, and now hardware that can give us a modern take on it. This still feels like something to be excited about, to be honest.
Available for digital pre-order, and retailing at £41.99 it doesn’t feel too steep to take a plunge into a re-make of one of the best games of it’s generation.
The game is an on-rails shooter for the most part, with some opportunities to get a bit more loose with things.

Changes
A quick look at the trailer/Direct and you can clearly see the massive graphical changes.
Nintendo are promising a more cinematic approach, with new cutscenes and elements of story being added. Tie-in the new/improved multiplayer mode. Game share, and a legit case to use the mouse controls. It feels like this is how we perhaps see Starfox 64 fully-realised.
Sure, we could get more remakes in the future. But if this is the best version of one of the best games, then it’s worth a shot. Bringing a whole new audience to the world of Starfox, and potentially priming them for a series or film spin-off?

Fox McCloud
Fox McCloud was prety heavily featured in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, to a point where speculation was rife that we could see a film or animated series. When you think about it, the characters and the world a ripe for animated fun. Space adventures, talking animals, star-based action. It’s there for the taking, and whether or not we want it, it seems daft for the IP to not be pushed a bit harder.
It may be good, it may not. Heck, it may not even happen. But you can see the potential, and a release of Starfox on Switch 2, following on from Fox’s appearance in the movie look like solid steps to start a bit of a push.
Who knows? For now we’re excited to re-visit one of the best games from the N64 and potentially experience it in an entirely new way. Cinematics, mouse controls. This might be special. It’ll certainly something that Nintendo can use as a console exclusive and hopefully show what their new first-party games can do on the hardware.
We’ll do all we can to independently report back on how the game launch goes, how it plays, and if it’s worth your money.
Sure, people are upset that it’s yet another remake of the same game. But if we’re right, this could be the start of a new phase for Fox, Peppy, Slippy and Falco.
Perhaps Andross is going to be more renowned around the world in a few years time? We’ll see!
