Everything we know about Marvel’s Wolverine

Marvel's Wolverine

It feels like it has been forever, but we’re nearly there now. After years of speculation and teaser trailers that left us hungry for more, the wait for Insomniac Games’ next potential Marvel masterpiece is finally nearing its end. Marvel’s Wolverine is officially set to slash its way onto the PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026.

While Insomniac has been pretty tight-lipped, a flurry of recent announcements and Spring 2026 updates have given us an idea of what to expect from the Wolverine standalone debut.

Here’s a quick run-down everything that we know so far.

The Release Date & Platform

With Marvel’s Wolverine being made by Insomniac Games (the same studio that have brought us the excellent Spider-Man games). This is again going to be a PlayStation exclusive, with them being a Sony Games Studio.

Mark your calendars for September 15, 2026. As of now, the game is a PS5 exclusive. Unlike previous titles that eventually made their way to PC, current reports indicate that Sony is keeping this heavy hitter strictly on console for the foreseeable future to showcase the hardware’s power.

With the recent news showing that Sony are withdrawing as much marketing around porting games to PC, and seemingly stripping their output back to just their consoles. It might be that Marvel’s Wolverine stays wholly exclusive to the PS5, which is a real shame.

A More Brutal Logan

If you were worried that being under the Marvel banner would mean a “PG-13” experience, think again. Insomniac has confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine will be a Mature-rated (M) title.

The combat is expected to feature “buckets of gore,” with Logan’s claws serving as more than just visual flair.

Gameplay clips and descriptions suggest visceral combat involving dismemberment and brutal finishers. This isn’t the quip-heavy atmosphere of Spider-Man either; it is a serious, gritty character study focusing on a man who doesn’t necessarily consider himself a hero.

Time will tell, of course. But we all know Logan isn’t quite the same character type as Peter Parker, so expectations in Marvel’s Wolverine are set thwere they need to be, we think. Although, it’s a game based on a comic-book character, so there’s a lot of suspension of disbelief to really get into it.

Story and Setting

Marvel’s Wolverine is reportedly set before Logan joins the X-Men, which allows for a more personal, globetrotting journey as he searches for answers about his mysterious past.

Logan’s hunt will take him from the snowy forests of Canada to the neon-lit streets of Tokyo and the lawless mutant haven of Madripoor. As for the cast, Liam McIntyre (of Spartacus and Gears of War fame) is providing the voice and performance capture for Logan.

To keep the stakes high, iconic foes like Omega Red and Mystique have been confirmed to play major roles in the narrative.

It’ll be really interesting to see what story arcs Marvel’s Wolverine draws from to put the narrative together and how it sets a tone. We know how great a job Insomniac have done with Spider-Man, so it’s likely to be solid, that’s for sure.

Gameplay Mechanics

Insomniac is leaning heavily into what makes Wolverine unique by making his Healing Factor a core mechanic rather than just a plot point.

You will see Logan take visible damage in real-time, only for his wounds to knit back together as you fight. His Superhuman Senses also play a vital role, allowing players to track enemies, find hidden clues, and navigate the environment with ease.

Finally, much like the web-swinging in Spider-Man, Claw Traversal will be essential; players can expect to use Logan’s adamantium blades for scaling buildings and navigating treacherous terrain. Marvel’s Wolverine isn’t going to be an open-world game, though. It’s going to be “open-world hubs”, which is interesting.

Perhaps we need to think of it more like Arkham Asylum? Where you had open spaces to do all you needed to do, but it wasn’t about having a full city to explore un-interrupted? Putting a focus on the narrative is probably for the best, and let’s be honest, Logan isn’t quite as mobile as Spider-Man, so how would that even work?

What’s Next?

Insomniac has promised a deep-dive gameplay reveal later this Spring, likely during a dedicated State of Play. This will be our first look at the UI, the flow of combat, and just how “open” these global hubs really are.

Stay tuned. Things are about to get bloody.
