Pirates! July has been all about pirates, and Sea of Thieves has been an integral part of it. Moreover, it’s been a significant part of our ongoing gaming for a few years now.
With the recent changes, opening-up the seas to the community, it’s had fresh life breathed into it.
Now, Rare has officially rolled out Update 3.8.1 for Sea of Thieves, bringing a wave of quality-of-life changes.
Major balancing tweaks for naval combat, reworked Commendations, and a teaser for upcoming August events in Sea of Thieves.
Whether you’re setting up cinematics in Custom Seas or battling it out in Last Ship Standing, here’s everything you need to know about the latest patch!
Custom Seas & Cinematic Upgrades
Custom Seas continues to receive love for Sea of Thieves creators and practice-focused crews:
Emoting with Free Camera: Creators and cinematographers can now trigger emotes while freely navigating in Free Camera mode.
Pirate Practice Preset: A new official preset offers instant access to a pre-configured playground designed for rapid practice in naval combat, World Events, and general sailing mechanics.
Join Code Protection: When entering a Join Code for a private session, digits are hidden by default to prevent accidental leaks on live streams or video recordings.

Combat & Gameplay Balancing
Dynamic Bone Callers (there’s a joke here about someone’s mum…)
Offensive Bone Callers thrown onto rival ships now scale dynamically based on ship size:
Sloop: Summons 1 skeleton
Brigantine: Summons 2 skeletons
Galleon: Summons 3 skeletons
Note: Defensive Bone Callers thrown on your own ship or on land remain unchanged, summoning 3 skeletons across all vessel sizes.

Last Ship Standing & Naval Adjustments
Shrinking Battle Bounds: The final arena radius now slowly shrinks over a 10-minute period starting at the 25-minute mark, preventing endless stalemates.
Easier Loot Recovery: Jettisoned resource barrels, storage crates, and Emissary Flags from sunken ships now spawn circling seagulls overhead for better visibility.
Diving with Emissary Flags: Victorious crews claiming rival Emissary Flags can now dive straight into their next match while carrying conquered flags as trophies.

Commendation Quality-of-Life Overhauls
Several legacy and tedious Commendations have been expanded with clearer, more forgiving progression paths:
| Commendation Rework Highlights | |
|---|---|
| Merchant Alliance | Four new commodities on Merchant Trade Routes now grant progress toward Merchant Forager, Merchant Shipwright, Cast Iron Merchant, and Black Powder Merchant. |
| Miles Sailed | Company sailing distance goals (e.g., Sailor of the Gold Horizon) now accumulate distance while sailing as an Emissary, not just on active Voyage quests. |
| Faction Battles | Winning matches while maintaining an active streak now continues to progress Ferocious Warrior, Best of the Best, and related champion achievements. |
| Burning Blade | Playing the Part now requires returning 1 Burning Blade with 8+ Rituals (down from 10). |

Sea of Thieves August Events & Emporium Additions
To top it all off, Sea of Thieves has a slew of events to help budding Pirate Legends with boosts and additional gains.
Emissaries of Fortune (Starts August 5th): Every Wednesday for 24 hours, Emissaries receive boosted multiplier rewards across all grades.
Bilge Rats Weekender (August 14–17): Features high-flying stunt challenges, the return of Reaper Gunpowder Runs, and new Doubloon items in the Black Market (including the Devilish Duchess Dress and Touch Grass Emote).
Pirate Emporium: Introduces the Smouldering Pegasus ship collection, weapons, and costume set, plus the returning Palm Tree Wave emote (free for all players).
Key QoL Fix: Supplies purchased from the Merchant Alliance or Hunter’s Call now drop neatly onto the ground nearby upon redemption, preventing lost stock or broken interactions.
