Oh man, Capcom are starting with the big teases ready for the release of Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance next year. As a massive fan of Monster Hunter Wilds, I’m eager to get more information about the big expansion, especially as it’ll likely be a cornerstone for content and game play for the entire year.
With a daily release of weapon showcases for the upcoming expansion we’re starting to see substantial changes coming to the game’s combat system.
The centrepiece of these reveals is the introduction of Boosted Actions and the expansion-wide rollout of Offset Attacks. These system updates fundamentally shift combat pacing across all 14 weapon types.

Universal System Mechanics
Boosted Actions & The Boost Bracer
The central mechanical addition in Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is the Boost Bracer, a slinger upgrade that powers up Boosted Actions. Spending meter generated through standard combat loops temporarily enters a Boosted state, altering weapon move sets, speeding up charge times, and enabling enhanced finisher attacks.
Universal Offset Attacks
Every weapon type in Ascendance, even those previously lacking defensive parry tools, gains access to an Offset Attack. Heavy hitters like the Great Sword receive double-offset paths, allowing hunters to clash with and interrupt relentless monster aggression directly.
What is an offset attack?
Not necessarily unique to Monster Hunter Wilds, or the Ascendance DLC. But a big part of the changes. An Offset Attack is a mechanic in Monster Hunter Wilds that acts as a physical clash or offensive parry. Instead of dodging, rolling, or blocking, you swing your weapon directly into a monster’s physical attack right as it is about to hit you.
When timed correctly, the force of your weapon “offsets” the monster’s momentum, absorbing the blow and creating a high-value opening. Incredibly satisfying and cool to watch!
At best, I’ve been doing this by chance in my Monster Hunter play, but it’s going to be a really big focus for me in Ascendance. Mastering that more to keep the flow and the momentum, will be crucial.

Weapon-Specific Breakdown
We haven’t seen them all yet, but it’s too exciting to not get sharing what we’ve already seen. Especially with our new-found love, the Sword and Shield. Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is really going for it with these new boosted actions and offset attacks, plus other enhancements.
Great Sword
- Boosted Actions: Enhanced charge speed across all levels and altered follow-up paths out of Power Clashes.
- Double Offset: Gains access to a secondary Offset attack, allowing hunters to chain parries directly out of a charge stance if a monster follows up immediately.
- Enhanced True Charged Slash: Under Boosted status, TCS converts into a rapid multi-hit slam with reduced knockback frames.
Bow
- Close-Range & Ranged Boost: The Bow’s Boosted state turns it into an aggressive hybrid weapon.
- Boosted Arrow Firepower: Shot output and coatings get increased motion values, alongside faster charge times for Dragon Piercer.
- Point-Blank Blast: A new close-quarters Boosted action allows hunters to detonate arrow charges at point-blank range, combining high physical damage with immediate evasive repositioning.
Sword & Shield
- Bladecoating Slash (Item-Coated Blade): Oils return to the SnS kit through a new Bladecoating Slash maneuver that can be executed even outside of Boosted mode. Hunters can coat their blade using standard pouch items—such as Potions for hit-based healing, Demondrugs for attack boosts, or Thunderbugs for stun build-up.
- Slinger Tether & Grapple Leaps: Integrates a Clutch-Claw-style tethering move into basic movement, letting the hunter attach directly to a monster from mid-range and yeet themselves onto the target to instantly close distance.
- Falling Bash Offset: The SnS gains a dedicated Offset Attack wired into the Falling Bash finisher, allowing hunters to clash directly with monster attacks mid-air and interrupt incoming aggression.
- Quick Access Aerial Follow-ups: Features an upgraded rapid-access aerial leap directly after executing a forward dash, giving the SnS ultra-high uptime and continuous target attachment in Ascendance.
Hammer & Heavy Melee
- Stagger Follow-Ups: Hammer gains specialised follow-up options directly after executing successful Offset clashes.
- Mighty Charge Extensions: Faster charge transitions when stepping or dodging mid-combo, keeping heavy hits coming without breaking momentum.

Ranged Weapons (Light & Heavy Bowguns)
- Recoil & Rapid Fire Tuning: Expanded aim-assist options and refined recoil loops across specialised ammo types.
- Gauge Recovery: Improved gauge restoration rates when utilising specialised status or elemental ammo types, in Ascendance.
Charge Blade
- Instantaneous Phial Charges: Allows hunters to transfer sword energy directly into loaded phials mid-combo, completely bypassing the stationary reload animation.
- Earth-Shattering Elemental Discharge: A new ground finisher that channels stored phials into a massive forward explosion. Using the Boost Bracer, the hunter thrusts the shield forward like a stake driver for immense burst damage.
- Savage Axe Focus Strike: Landing a Focus Strike on a monster’s wound now instantly triggers Savage Axe mode, accelerating the weapon’s damage loop and extending offensive uptime.
Lance
- Boost Driver Offset (Overhead Slap): The Lance gains a heavy overhead shield slap that acts as an Offset Attack in Ascendance. Winning the clash allows for an immediate shield charge to close the distance on staggered monsters.
- Rapid Multi-Hit Thrusts: While Boosted, the traditional triple-poke combo extends into a rapid six-to-seven hit string.
- Ranged Power Guard: The most significant addition—successfully countering from a Power Guard while Boosted fires a wind pressure blast from the shield, pushing damage out at range rather than keeping it strictly in melee.
Insect Glaive
- Grounded Onslaught & Kinsect Synergy: The Boosted state heavily extends ground combo chains, with the Kinsect delivering simultaneous tick damage alongside the hunter’s physical strikes.
- Simultaneous Harvest: The Boost Driver action spins the glaive while sending the Kinsect out to attack and extract essence in a single fluid motion.
- Offset Aerial Gateways: The Glaive receives a dedicated grounded Offset Attack in Ascendance. Successfully clashing with a monster attack acts as the primary launcher for aerial vaulting follow-ups.

Community Takeaway
The massive influx of defensive counters, offsets, and high-output Boosted Actions has sparked lively discussion online.
Giving every weapon an offset or clash tool suggests that upcoming Master Rank / G-Rank equivalent monsters will be significantly faster, hit harder, and demand active interaction rather than passive dodging.
The Master-rank/G-Rank hunts are going to make you earn your stripes. Just like in all Monster Hunter games. Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is one of the best, and going back for these new challenges, new monsters, new environments and now, new weapon abilities. 2027 can’t come soon enough.
Now I need to go and try get used to a few other weapons, and of course see what the Long Sword is going to look like. Because in theory, it’s the coolest-looking weapon and move set in the series. I’ve just never managed to get to grips with it before. Perhaps Ascendance is the time.
