Nintendo Direct: 40 Years of The Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda - 40 Years

Nintendo dropped a massive Nintendo Direct presentation to celebrate 40 years of The Legend of Zelda, and they are going all out.

From total game overhauls to live concerts and physical gear, there is an absolute mountain of stuff headed our way starting this year and stretching right into 2027.

Ocarina of Time

The biggest headline is easily The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which is getting a proper ground-up remake for the Nintendo Switch 2 on 5 November. Priced similarly to the Star Fox remaster, too.

We’re not just talking a basic HD polish here. Eiji Aonuma showed off full visual overhauls, fully voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, snappier movement controls, and a fully symphonic orchestral score.

They are even adding a microphone mechanic where you can hum or play Link’s learned tunes to make him perform them in-game. Physical collectors will want to grab the first print run early to bag the textured foil cover art.

Although getting a physical pre-order in the UK doesn’t seem to work at the moment.

We’ll do a bit more of a breakdown of how it’s changing some fundamentals in the future (jumping!!). But for now The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is real, it’s out soon, and we’re excited.

New hardware

If you are looking to upgrade your setup, a special Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Nintendo Switch 2 system drops a week earlier, on 29 October.

Alongside matching Triforce-themed Pro Controllers and carrying cases.

There are also actual playable and electric ocarinas on the way from HORI, plus new Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo landing in 2027 that unlock retro-style masks in Ocarina of Time.

We do love a themed controller and the idea of playing the Ocarina of Time is ridiculously appealing. Will 40 years of The Legend of Zelda make us go crazy?

Other tidbits

Outside of the games themselves, a global 40th Anniversary Concert series kicks off next year, hitting London in April 2027 after stops in Tokyo and Chicago.

The Nintendo Museum in Kyoto is getting in on the action too, offering special anniversary tickets, new photo spots, and opening a Super Family Restaurant this autumn.

This stuff felt like fluff to pad-out the time in the Direct, but it’s still pretty cool.

Rounding off the chaos, Nintendo teased a 1,750-piece LEGO Link and Epona set for spring 2027, a 27-inch electronic Master Sword from Hasbro, and new companion features arriving in the ZELDA NOTES app.

The Legend of Zelda - Movie

To top it all off, the previously announced live-action Legend of Zelda movie finally has its global cinema release date set for 30 April 2027.

With only a logo and some soft details about the name (or lack thereof), we’re still in the dark about everything. But that just means it’s something else to look forward to.

Big November

Nintendo have come out swinging, in a month where all games are avoiding release, to keep out of the wake of Grand Theft Auto VI. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is out 2 weeks before the cultural behemoth.

Link can jump now, and that boy is taking big swings.

What a great time to be into gaming and legendary franchises.
